April Meeting Recap & HOPE Packs

Wythe County Democrats met for our April General Meeting this past Tuesday, April 21st. At the meeting, we talked about a variety of topics which you can find in our monthly meeting minutes when they’re posted (links to our minutes and other committee information below). Most importantly, members present voted in John Register as the new Chair of the Wythe County Democratic Committee.

We also wanted to invite all local Democrats to join us as we volunteer this Wednesday, April 29th to pack HOPE Packs at Open Door Cafe. This is our scheduled date in the rotation meaning Open Door is relying on us to provide enough volunteers to pack this essential food for Wythe and Bland County K-12 students. If you can join us, bring a friend, and we’ll see you Wednesday at 5pm.

Midterm Elections

2026 U.S. Senate & House of Representatives Elections

The midterms are coming up fast, and we have the opportunity to send a new representative to Congress from Southwest Virginia, provide a check on the actions of the administration, and keep a Democrat representing Virginia in the Senate.

We have three declared Democratic candidates for the 9th Congressional District, Adam Murphy, Douglas Crockett, & Joy Powers.  You can find out more information about them below, and we’ll share events from each campaign. It is fantastic that we have three great candidates.

Recent legislation has moved the primary election from June, so the new primary election date is Tuesday, August 4th with early voting opening on June 18th. This is the new primary election date regardless of the outcome of the redistricting referendum.

Senator Mark Warner is also up for re-election, and has officially secured the Democratic nomination. Find more about his campaign and how to get involved below.

Local Government

Local Elections & Upcoming Meetings

While we don’t have any officially partisan local offices on the ballot in 2026, we do have plenty of non-partisan offices on the ballot this year.

Town of Wytheville will elect:

  • Mayor

  • 2 Town Councilmembers

Town of Rural Retreat will elect:

  • Mayor

  • 3 Town Councilmembers

The filing deadline for these elections is June 16th, but those interested in running need to start working on their paperwork much earlier.  While these aren’t partisan offices, if anyone is interested in running, and would like additional information or assistance please reach out.

Upcoming Local Government Meetings

All these meetings are open to the public and provide time for citizens’ comments.  You can also watch recordings of the meetings on their websites.

The Town of Wytheville is also accepting feedback on their Comprehensive Plan. If you have a couple of minutes, make your voice heard on the direction you’d like to see the community move.
