Monthly Meetings

February General Meeting

Wythe County Democrats will hold our monthly general meeting on Tuesday, February 17th at 7pm (this meeting had to be moved back an hour due to a scheduling conflict).  Remember our meetings are normally on the third Tuesday of each month at 6pm at the Wytheville Training School Cultural Center (410 E Franklin St). You can find our meeting agenda and January minutes attached. A good chunk of our meeting will be establishing some subcommittees and planning out our focus areas for the upcoming year. We need your help in moving the needle here in Wythe County, so bring a friend, neighbor, coworker, family member, and anyone else interested in getting more involved.

In Solidarity,

Wythe County Democratic Committee Leadership

Midterm Elections

2026 U.S. Senate & House of Representatives Elections

The midterms are coming up, and we have the opportunity to send a new representative to Congress from Southwest Virginia, provide a check on the actions of the administration, and keep a Democrat representing Virginia in the Senate.

We have three declared Democratic candidates for the 9th Congressional District, Adam Murphy, Douglas Crockett, & Joy Powers.  You can find out more information about them below, and we’ll share events from each campaign. It is fantastic that we have three great candidates, and the primary election will be on June 16th with early voting opening on May 1st.

Senator Mark Warner is also up for re-election, and you can learn more about that campaign and his Democratic primary challengers Lorita Daniels and Mark Moran as well below.

Local Government

Local Elections & Upcoming Meetings

While we don’t have any officially partisan local offices on the ballot in 2026, we do have plenty of non-partisan offices on the ballot this year.

Town of Wytheville will elect:

  • Mayor

  • 2 Town Councilmembers

Town of Rural Retreat will elect:

  • Mayor

  • 3 Town Councilmembers

The filing deadline for these elections is June 16th, but those interested in running need to start working on their paperwork much earlier.  While these aren’t partisan offices, if anyone is interested in running, and would like additional information or assistance please reach out.

Legislative Action

Virginia General Assembly

With the new Democratic General Assembly session reaching its halfway point, bills have passed and are in discussion that will affect communities like Wythe County. The Virginia Legislative Information System is where you can see what’s being proposed in Richmond, follow bills as they move through the process, watch committee meetings, and even sign up to submit written comments or speak on legislation. With Democrats in control of the Virginia General Assembly, many pieces of legislation aimed at helping working families, expand access to health care, focus on education, and make significant invest in places like Southwest Virginia. This is one of the easiest ways for everyday Virginians to stay informed and make their voices heard.

Legislation has also been moving forward to set a special election for a Virginia Constitutional Amendment which would take place on Tuesday, April 21st (Early Voting from March 6 - April 18). The only thing on the ballot for this special election would be a Yes or No vote on the following question, “Should the Constitution of Virginia be amended to allow the General Assembly to temporarily adopt new congressional districts to restore fairness in the upcoming elections, while ensuring Virginia’s standard redistricting process resumes for all future redistricting after the 2030 census?” You can find more information about what a Yes vote would mean from Virginians for Fair Elections.
