Monthly Meetings
March General Meeting
Wythe County Democrats will hold our monthly general meeting on Tuesday, March 17th at 6pm at the Wytheville Training School Cultural Center (410 E Franklin St.) You can find our meeting agenda and February minutes attached. With early voting already open for the redistricting referendum (more information below) and so much work needed to get ready for this year’s consequential midterm and local elections, we need your help in moving the needle here in Wythe County, so bring a friend, neighbor, coworker, family member, and anyone else interested in getting more involved.
In Solidarity,
Wythe County Democratic Committee Leadership

Legislative Action
Virginia General Assembly
The 2026 General Assembly regular session has officially adjourned and many bills have failed, and many are heading to the Governor’s desk for her signature. Lawmakers have moved proposals to increase the minimum wage, guarantee paid sick leave for workers, expand access to affordable childcare, regulate data centers and similar developments, finish creating cannabis retail markets, dramatically expand funding for public schools including school construction/renovation, increasing funding for healthcare and lowering prescription drug costs, expand provide more incentives and protections for affordable housing, and many other pieces of legislation. Several housing reforms aimed at allowing more apartments and townhomes have moved forward, and other legislation under consideration includes energy efficiency programs to lower utility costs, and constitutional amendments on a variety of issues.
At the same time, the legislators are still negotiating changes to the budget to possibly include tax rebates, a higher standard deduction, teacher pay raises, and new investments in affordable housing and assistance programs, all while avoiding new taxes. Negotiations are still ongoing about the budget and most bills and finalized awaiting the governor’s action, so check out the official General Assembly website to go straight to the source and read this legislation that may become law.
Midterm Elections
2026 U.S. Senate & House of Representatives Elections

The midterms are coming up, and we have the opportunity to send a new representative to Congress from Southwest Virginia, provide a check on the actions of the administration, and keep a Democrat representing Virginia in the Senate.
We have three declared Democratic candidates for the 9th Congressional District, Adam Murphy, Douglas Crockett, & Joy Powers. You can find out more information about them below, and we’ll share events from each campaign. It is fantastic that we have three great candidates.
Recent legislation has moved the primary election from June, so the new primary election date is Tuesday, August 4th with early voting opening on June 18th. This is the new primary election date regardless of the outcome of the redistricting referendum.
Senator Mark Warner is also up for re-election, and you can learn more about that campaign and his Democratic primary challengers Lorita Daniels and Mark Moran as well below.
Local Government
Local Elections & Upcoming Meetings

While we don’t have any officially partisan local offices on the ballot in 2026, we do have plenty of non-partisan offices on the ballot this year.
Town of Wytheville will elect:
Mayor
2 Town Councilmembers
Town of Rural Retreat will elect:
Mayor
3 Town Councilmembers
The filing deadline for these elections is June 16th, but those interested in running need to start working on their paperwork much earlier. While these aren’t partisan offices, if anyone is interested in running, and would like additional information or assistance please reach out.
